I own the first two seasons on the strength of various people's recommendations, but haven't had time to marathon the show. Should I just not start watching and save myself the pain?

I would actually recommend that you watch the first two seasons, and maybe the first few eps of S3. They are really good, and there's a terrific self-contained story there.

The first 6-8 eps of S1 have some torture of guest characters in them as part of the various A plots, but that goes away fairly quickly.
