I did a meme, and you can, too!

Tell me you want to play and I'll pick up to three of your fandoms. Then update your journal and answer the following questions:

  1. What got you into this fandom in the first place?

  2. Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?

  3. Favorite episodes/books/movies, etc?

  4. Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?

  5. Do you think more people should get into this fandom?

[personal profile] sdwolfpup gave me these three fandoms: Doctor Who, Community, Six Feet Under. I'll do them in three separate posts.

Doctor Who

  1. What got you into this fandom in the first place? I started watching it during middle school. In California on PBS in the 1980s, we were treated to Four and Five punctuated with pledge drives. I think a geeky friend of mine may have encouraged me to watch it, but I can't recall. I fell hard for the concept, the writing, and the science fictionyness, and I loved Sarah Jane in her orange sherbet pantsuit (even though my friend thought she was a useless screamer and mocked me for it). The show never scared me, but it often made me think. When the TV movie came out in the 90s, I was still enough of a fan to watch it (not liking it much), and when RTD revived the show I never looked back. It's full of kittens. Meanwhile, I've been watching the classic episodes I missed.

  2. Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on? Doctor Who is actually the show I've been fannish about the longest, but I never assume I'll love anything forever.

  3. Favorite episodes/books/movies, etc? I don't recall any of Four or Five's tenure well enough to cite favorite episodes there, but of the new series, I love "Blink" and "Silence in the Library"/"Forest of the Dead" the best. I'm also very fond of "Let's Kill Hitler".

  4. Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)? I vid it. I have made a few icons and posted a few episode recaps. I am actually not as active in the fandom as I'd like to be, mostly because I'm a spoilerphobe.

  5. Do you think more people should get into this fandom? Of course! It can be intensely rewarding and there's so darned MUCH of it. It's great for people who get their hearts broken over early cancellations.

  1. What got you into this fandom in the first place?

Fan fiction! God, this is almost lost in the mists of time (or, to be more accurate, my really bad memory), but I started out reading LotR fan fiction, because I loved the movies so. And then I ran out of stuff to read, and I tried branching out, but most of the LotR writers I loved were in RPF, which I couldn't do. So I started searching around, and from there I found Sentinel. And most of the TS writers were also writing dS. I asked someone - oh god, I can't even remember who! - for a summary, and got a really confusing one, because I was reading Ray K but she only knew the Ray V eps. In the end, I just started reading.

And I never looked back. So many great writers! Such great characters! Magical realism that made anything possible! Eventually I even watched a few eps of canon, I loved dS so. (Ray K sounded exactly the way I heard him in my head. Fraser's voice surprised the hell out of me.)

  2. Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?

I guess I've already moved on, but this is a fandom that will always be in my heart. It was my primary fandom for so long, and such a great experience, and I just. I will always love it. (I always say: dS is forever in my heart; Sports Night is forever in my head.)

  3. Favorite episodes/books/movies, etc?

Ha ha ha ha ha. Oh, sorry. But - I guess Asylum? I've seen it!

  4. Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?

I wrote fan fiction for it! And I recommend it. And wrote a Fandoms I Have Loved post for it. That's as active as I get, honestly.

  5. Do you think more people should get into this fandom?

Yes! Oh, yes. Everyone should have dS in their lives and hearts and Pinboard account. So much great fan fiction. Such an incredibly slashy source. And my experience in it was great - I mean, fandoms change over time, but it was welcoming and friendly and supportive for me, and I want everyone to have that.

I have to tell you, as someone who attempted to watch TS and gave up like five minutes into the first episode - if you ever need a pick-me-up, consider Sentinel. I laughed SO HARD at the opening, which features the world's least probable soldier running through a jungle that is actually a temperate forest, his body language so awkward and uncomfortable that the actor appeared to be physically recoiling from his own costume. Unfortunately, it also tweaked the hell out of my embarrassment squick. Plus I was desatting. We had to quit. (BB, who made it ALL THE WAY THROUGH DANTE'S COVE, gave up on The Sentinel after one episode. Definitely better in fan fiction.)
