Can anyone recommend to me some contemporary dance music that doesn't consist of:

  • a man telling a woman he loves the way she shakes her ass

  • a woman telling a man he loves the way she shakes her ass

  • a man telling a woman to shake her ass because he will love it

  • a woman telling a woman to shake her ass because a man will love it

  • a man telling a woman he is struggling with the virgin/whore dichotomy due to all the ass-shaking

?

This post brought to you by horrifying discoveries in my Zumba and U-Jam classes.

The Pet Shop Boys are still making music! They're pretty much not interested in female asses. Hmm... does Lady Gaga's Just Dance cross your threshold? It's about drinking and dancing, but it doesn't read as skeevy in that way to me. Or maybe Peaches?

Done!

How fast-paced does the music need to be? *is pondering*

...I can recommend Irish rebel music dance remixes? Somehow I don't think that's what you're going for, though...

Huh, those aren't on my MP3 player. Wonder why not. *fixes*

Yay!

Found out why they're not on my MP3 player. They were on the wrong drive. They weren't in my Music folder at all.

All possibilities? When I was a teenager I used to have a regular workout session to a cassette tape full of Andrew Lloyd Webber; I remember King Herod's song ("Walk across my swimming pool") was particularly good.

I'm not sure it's upbeat enough, but Imelda May's album, Mayhem has a cool retro sound.

Icona Pop - I love it
Matisyahu - Sunshine
Aviici - Wake Me Up
Armin Van Buuren - This is What it Feels Like
Sara Bareilles - Brave
Michael Franti and Spearhead - Say Hey (I Love You)
Ok Go - Invincible

I've got a variety of instrumental epic trance here, but I have no idea if that's Zumba music. But it sure can be bouncy. Look for things by Chicane, Tiesto, OceanLab...

none of this is pop but it all makes me dance.

A Tribe Called Red is doing some interesting things with dance remixes of First Nation music.

local to me music:
Zydepunks (zydeco mixed with various folk musics and a rhythm section stolen from the metal scene.)
Bonsoir Catin (modern interpretations of trad cajun/creole.)
The Figs (blues and cajun girl group.)

if you like mashups i highly suggest http://bootiemashup.com/blog/ for good ones.

Hi! Passing by on Network. Not sure if danceable but:

Janelle Monáe - Q.U.E.E.N., Dance Apocalyptic, Tightrope...
Azealia Banks - 212 (very explicit!)
Estelle - Do My Thang (<-- I love this song so much!)
Junior Senior - Move Your Feet, Can I Get Get Get
Beyoncé - Put a Ring On It, Girls Rule the World

ETA: Do let me know if you have trouble finding anything, I can make you a zip (iTunes files, tho, sorry).

If "woman telling everyone to dance because dance is fucking awesome DANCE NAO" is acceptable, than Ke$ha's "Blow" and "Take It Off" may work. Similarly, if actual rejection of guys/this scenario works, P!nk's "U+Ur Hand" and Britney Spears' (I know) "Womanizer".

P!nk: "Get This Party Started", "God is a DJ", "So What", "Here Comes The Weekend" and "Raise Your Glass" might work, as might David Guetta's non-vocal stuff.

Good luck!

Check our Dragonette and CSS (recruiter tracks are usually Music is My Hot Hot Sex and Let's Make Love And Listen to Death From Above). Dragonette is more straight dancey music. CSS is frequently dancey, always funky and kind of strange.

I can give more recs when I can get on Spotify

Seconding the recs for Pet Shop Boys and Tribe Called Red. Some other recs, mostly from 5-10 years ago because I haven't been keeping up with really contemporary stuff:

Afro-Celt Sound System
Digitalism, I Love You, Dude (much better than Idealism)
Fiamma Fumana (remember that Farscape vid I did? Italian folk-techno!)
The Field (largely instrumental)
Kylie Minogue (yes, really)
Robyn, Body Talk
Ben Watts' Buzzin' Fly compilations

I also have a weakness for Paul Oakenfold's Global Underground: New York compilation. And there are various collections of Bhangra dance hits that are worth sampling, as well.

- Stromae - Papaoutai
- Natalia Kills - Wonderland
- Balkan Beatbox - Hermetico
- HaDag Nahash - Shir Neshama
- Diamond Rings - Show Me Your Stuff

All of these artists have more stuff that fits your criteria, if you like the stuff I linked.

Yay! I can tell you that songs from Digitalism and Robyn ended up in my obsesso-songs a couple of years ago, if you want to start there. There's also this mix, which isn't dance music per se but is fairly c'mon-get-moving.

Also here via [community profile] metaquotes.

Gwen Stefani's 'Hollaback Girl'? In the sense of no really, the aqua aerobics instructor at my local pool played that one. I was doing laps at the time, and suddenly went WTF? and started listening more closely. So I got to hear her belatedly call out to her class "Uh, nobody minds the bad language, do they?"

So I used to DJ in college so I figured I'd offer up some suggestions.

Songs to dance to that should fit your request:
* Seconding the Pink suggestion above (U&Ur Hand, 18 Wheeler, Get the Party Started, Blow Me (One Last Kiss), Raise Your Glass, Bad Influence)
* Le Bien Qui Fait Mall - Mozart L'Opera (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6R770P9wl0)
* Thrift Shop - Macklemore
* Girl In the Fire - Pendulumn (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCKpzP5SGYw, it builds really well I think)
* Waka Waka (This Time For Africa) - Shakira
* Wonderland - Natalia Kills (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohSV61RjMZk)
* Drive it like you stole it - Glitch Mob (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kON_KRmFRKk)
* Carameldansen
* Boom Boom - Super Junior (honestly haven't looked up lyric translations in Korean so maybe it doesn't fit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUJnZRUJBDo)
* Call Me Maybe - Carly Rae Jepsen
* Fuck You - Cee Lo Green
* Snakes on a Plane - Cobra Starship (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFlmTnji5Lk)
* Alllez Olla Ole - Jessy Matador (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvI7EKz0K2k no idea lyric translations)
* I Love it - Icona Pop (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_q8L8Tksd8)
* Your Love is My Drug - Keisha
* 4 Minutes to Save the World - Madonna & Justin Timberlake
* Paper Planes -MIA
* Planetary (GO!) - My Chemical Romance
* Numan Numa - O-zone (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cB1cqc23W2E)
* there's a good reason these tables are numbered honey you just haven't thought of it yet - Panic! at the Disco
* S&M - Rihanna
* Shut Up & Drive - Rihanna
* Spice World - Spice Girls (there are instructions for "everyone" to "shake it" but that's not gender specific, the band is commanding you to dance essentially, take that as you will)
* Written in the Stars - Tinie Tempah (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLBrteWONuo)
* Hot Hot Hot - Buster Pointedexter
* Dance of the Sand Witches - Tempest
* The Device Has Been Modified - Victims of Science (bonus geek points! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQUaEF2bJZ0)
* Disturbia - Rihanna
* Firework - Katy Perry
* Buttons - Pussycat Dolls (she is asking him to take of her clothes and it implies that she may be dancing while trying to convince him to do so).
* Starships - Nicki Minaj (she commands to "get on the floor" implying, like the Spice Girls that she wants everyone dancing but again not specifically gendered)
* Feel the Mambo - Helena Paprizou (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbgsBcr_Y58)
* For Your Entertainment - Adam Lambert

Slower but I still dance to them:
* Radioactive - Imagine Dragons
* Mad at Nothing -Patrick Stump
* Pretty Baby - Brendan Benson (blues dance music, so slow)

Here via [community profile] metaquotes! I work and work out to progressive house music mixes that have no words at all. Have a YouTube playlist:

http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8120D4848620C68E

I will note that most of those mixes have videos that mostly consist of women in bikinis. I usually just pin the tab and ignore the visuals, but these photos of strong women make a great antidote if you need one.

Try Indian techno, especially if the lyrics aren't in English. MidiVal Punditz would be my first recommendation, then branch out from there.
