Participate in a study on online harrassment

Via P.:

Are you a person, 18 years old or over, who has harassment on the Internet? If so, we would appreciate your taking the time to complete a survey.

Our names are Dan Taube, Keely Kolmes and Colette Vogele, and we would like to request your participation in our research on the experience of online harassment. Being harassed online includes things like having someone intrude into your privacy online, someone using the Internet or mobile phone technology to harm your reputation, or someone stalking you online. We want to learn about the kinds of experiences people have, how they cope, and the resources they use to address the problem.

This study has been approved by the Institutional Review Board of Alliant International University.

Your input may help in developing better services and resources for people who have experienced online harassment.

They're asking that you take a multiple-choice survey, which is completely confidential. The study is IRB-approved and IMO this is a worthwhile endeavor to shine light on a big problem.

Learn more and sign up here.

Unpacking the Bad Boy Woobie

[personal profile] 12_12_12 is eloquent:
Mentioning Logan leads me to the distinction between bad boys, and Bad Boy Woobies. Because there is a difference. I hate BBWs: I do not hate bad boys. I love watching effed-up, morally ambiguous and/or assholish characters as long as the show and the other characters recognize them for what they are, and they're dealt with properly. It's all in the writing. The problem with BBWs as characters/constructs is not that they are assholes, or even that they are misogynistic assholes: the problem is that they get written in incredibly problematic and offensive, rage-inducing ways, and the need to warp the show around them ends up damaging the other characters and the show itself (this is what I refer to as the BBW Cycle of Doom.)

I recommend reading the whole thing.

Dear Festividder

Thank you in advance for making me a vid!

If you've been matched to me, you've already seen everything under the cut-tag, but I want to reiterate here that I really am open to just about any kind of music, including and especially genres that may be underrepresented in my corner of fandom. I trend away from the screamy, but other than that, I can appreciate anything: jazz, J-Pop, classical, hip-hop, world, instrumentals...knock yourself out.

I do not have any triggers and there isn't any content in any of my requested sources that I would not be pleased to see in a vid (although perhaps best not to focus on the SFU episode "That's My Dog"). I welcome vids of all types: "old-school", effects-driven, pairing-based (slash, het, threesome or more), character studies, episodic, trailer-style, parody, meta- or critical, celebratory, recruiter, angsty, fluffy, arty...you name it, I've loved it. So go wild.

Most of all, have fun!

My requests: Oscar and Lucinda, Sports Night, An Education, Babylon 5, Red Dwarf, Six Feet Under )

You know, Festivids brings all sorts of unexpected pleasures -- like searching for and then watching the old trailers for my requests. (:

Big circle/flist purge

I can't keep up anymore -- work is just way too worky. It's nothing personal.

Also: if you crosspost to DW and LJ, and if I have you circled on DW and friended on LJ, I'm defriending your LJ and just following you on DW.

Vid Rec: The Price

In case it's not already all over your reading list, [personal profile] thingswithwings has just released The Price, the ultimate multi-fandom exploration of epic manpain. It is hilarious and thought-provoking and OTT in glorious ways. Mostly, though? Hilarious.

Her essay on the subject is not to be missed, either. A brilliant analysis of the manpain trope: why we love it, why we hate it. Don't miss.

Signal Boosting: vid auctions to benefit Christchurch earthquake recovery

[livejournal.com profile] obsessive24 is auctioning off a vid in any of more than two dozen fandoms. Bidding is already over $200, but if you know her work, you know she's worth every penny of that and more.

One of my favorite new-to-me vidders, [personal profile] imbir, is also doing an auction. She's offering Firefly, Life on Mars, and Veronica Mars as well as Cowboy Bebop and a couple of other fandoms. You may remember her festivid from last year, But a Ghost (Internal Affairs), or maybe you enjoyed her Paprika and Pan's Labyrinth offerings this year. She's an amazingly skilled cutter. Go bid!

Video-related news of interest

Those interested in the ever-complicated discussion of fair use as it applies to vidding will appreciate Anita Sarkeesian's How I Fought Against a YouTube Takedown and Eventually Won.

What's particularly relevant is the mention of an organization called New Media Rights, which "provides pro bono legal resources and its free media studio to creators - artists, filmmakers, podcasters, citizen journalists, bloggers, open source software projects, as well as nonprofits." NMR helped Anita restore her video and had some interesting insights about why it was taken down.

And by way of [personal profile] such_heights, I want to be sure to share this video by The Girls on Film. It's a line-for-line scene from the Star Trek reboot, with women cast in the men's roles. Check it out, it's awesome )

This is an ongoing project of The Girls on Film, who have also done scenes from Fight Club and The Town. The videos are simple, but the impact is striking. Can you imagine women in these roles? How would it change your experience as a filmgoer? How would it change cultural perceptions of what women can do?

ISO a New Fandom. Must like cats and long walks on the beach...

I've rewatched everything we own. I started Avatar: The Last Airbender but so far it hasn't really taken hold. The bloom is off the Leverage rose. I am still passionate about Doctor Who, but one show really can't carry me all year -- particularly not with just 13 eps + a special.

We have nothing to watch right now.

But I know you guys are still watching TV! So I come to you, hat in hand, to ask for suggestions. Promote your show! Tell me why I'd love it!

Some guidelines: )

Thanks for any suggestions!
